Partners
Herrmann & Murphy partner with many organizations including the following:
Time’s Up & The Legal Network for Gender Equity
Sean Herrmann and Kevin Murphy are members of the Legal Network for Gender Equity, in association with the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund and the National Women’s Law Center. Herrmann and Murphy has agreed to provide pro bono consultations with victims of sexual harassment and assault referred to the firm through these organizations.
The Legal Network for Gender Equity is a nationwide network of attorneys willing to step up and undertake legal representation of girls and women experiencing harassment or other forms of sex discrimination at school, at work, or in health insurance or health care settings.
North Carolina Advocates for Justice
Sean Herrmann and Kevin Murphy are members of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and Kevin chairs the Employment Law Section of this group. The NCAJ has protected individual rights in North Carolina for over 50 years. The NCAJ accomplishes its mission through effective advocacy work in the NC state legislature advocating for the rights of all citizens, through the development of various legal publications and over 40 professional development seminars annually to help attorneys improve their skills, and through the administration of a variety of public outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing public understanding of the U.S. legal system. The organization’s Legal Affairs Committee also monitors the development of law and serves as a trial attorney advocate to the State Bar.
Pro Bono & Community Involvement
Sean Herrmann and Kevin Murphy take their responsibility to the community seriously and each donate over 50 hours of their professional time to those who cannot afford legal representation. Sean and Kevin provide free legal services to individuals who qualify for North Carolina Legal Aid’s services and to individuals suing on their own in federal court.
Lawyer on the Line
The Lawyer on the Line program is a partnership of the North Carolina Bar Association and Legal Aid of North Carolina. The project connects Legal Aid clients with pro bono volunteers like the attorneys at Herrmann & Murphy who provide legal information over the phone.
The partnership is a big win for all involved: lawyers have a manageable way to do pro bono, Legal Aid lawyers have time to focus on more complex, impactful cases, and thousands of clients a year receive expert legal help at absolutely no cost.
Pro Se Settlement Assistance Program
In October 2013, the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina established a Pro Se Settlement Assistance Program. The program provides pro se litigants with no lawyer of their own free legal representation for purposes of a court-ordered mediation. Volunteer attorneys like those at Herrmann & Murphy represent the pro se litigant in preparation for mediation, during the mediation itself, and in the days or weeks after mediation in the event that negotiations are ongoing or if a settlement has been reached. We have helped resolve many of these cases and have helped other clients correct their legal strategies during our limited representation so that they are able to achieve greater success down the line in the event that the case is unable to be settled at mediation.
Mecklenburg County Bar Linking Lawyers
Sean serves on the Linking Lawyers committee helping lead an important initiative of the North Carolina bar that seeks to strengthen bonds between new lawyers and veteran attorneys. The aims of the program are twofold: (a) help new attorneys learn what it takes to establish a career in the law; and (b) help grow the networks of both mentor and mentee attorneys.
St. Matthew Catholic Church & Mel’s Diner
Kevin serves as a volunteer with St. Matthew Catholic Church’s Mel’s Diner ministry, which has been feeding the hungry since 2001. Kevin serves as a volunteer driver picking food up from local grocery stores and bringing it to the Mel’s Diner headquarters where it is directed to locals in need.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Lunch with a Lawyer
Kevin also volunteers his time with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Lunch with a Lawyer program. This program pairs attorneys with middle schoolers interested in pursuing a career in the law.
